A desk fan moves air. A pedestal fan moves air. Both appear to be simple machines—a motor, a blade assembly, a stand or base. Yet nearly every office building, workshop, warehouse, and retail space in North America has at least one, and many have dozens. They work without fanfare, are rarely maintained, often outlast the spaces they serve, and when they fail, operations don't stop—they simply get warmer or the air stalls.

Understanding desk and pedestal fans begins with a straightforward question: why do they exist at all? Central HVAC systems can cool or heat an entire building. Why spend money on a $40 or $200 separate device that only pushes air in one direction?
