Walk into any pharmacy and you will see a small aisle dedicated to oral care, and on the bottom shelf, almost as an afterthought, sit the denture cleaners. There are boxes of effervescent tablets in two or three brand names, a few tubes of paste, and maybe a powder. The packaging is replete with promises: "kills 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria," "removes tough stains in minutes," "fresher, brighter feeling." If you are a professional, you know to be skeptical. But to be truly skeptical, and thereby truly effective, you need to understand not just what these products claim, but what they actually are. You need to understand the chemistry and the physics of how they work, and, just as importantly, why their function matters beyond simple aesthetics.
Denture cleaning, at its core, is a process of removing unwanted substances from the surface and the subsurface pores of a prosthetic dental appliance. This process has two primary goals: the control of oral pathogens and the preservation of the prosthetic material itself. The first goal is a matter of systemic health.
