What Denture Adhesives Actually Are
A denture adhesive is a non-absorbable, topical material applied to the tissue- or base-side of a removable dental prosthesis to enhance its retention and stability. It is not a substitute for a properly fitting denture, a repair mechanism for broken bases, or a solution for grossly resorbed ridges. In clinical practice, it is a temporary or adjunctive measure to manage the normal gap between the denture base and the mucosa, a gap that widens as bone resorption occurs after extractions. The material is formulated as a cream, paste, powder, wafer, or pad, and its job is to occupy that dimensional void while maintaining viscoelasticity under the functional loads of chewing and swallowing.
The core functional ingredient in most modern adhesives is a polymer blend, typically a partial salt of a copolymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride, widely abbreviated as PVM-MA. These polymers are hygroscopic; they absorb water from the saliva present on the oral mucosa. When they absorb water, they swell and become sticky and cohesive. The actual adhesive force is a result of a few physical mechanisms: the wetting of the oral tissues, the viscosity of the gel formed, and the mechanical interlocking of that gel into the microscopic irregularities of the tissue and the denture base.
