A burr is a thin, sharp ridge of material left behind on a part after cutting, grinding, stamping, or casting. It is not a flaw in the metal or resin itself—it is unwanted material that remains because the tool or die that shaped the part cannot reach into every corner, and metal or plastic flows in unexpected directions during the shaping process. The job of a deburrer is to remove that sharp edge quickly, consistently, and safely enough that the part meets specifications for edge radius, surface finish, and functionality without damaging the material underneath.
Deburring sounds simple until you run a production shop. Then it becomes clear that deburring is actually a process—one that takes time, wears equipment, costs money, and directly affects whether your parts pass inspection, assemble correctly, and perform safely in the field. A burr that seems small on a precision bearing races can cause premature failure. A sharp edge on a medical device can injure a patient or nurse.
