In practical terms, an easel performs five functions simultaneously. First, it holds paper flat against a base plane; any curl, warping, or slippage during exposure will produce an out-of-focus or blurred edge. Second, it masks the edges of the paper to create clean white borders and to prevent light from fogging the edges during enlargement. Third, it provides precise corner registration so that successive prints (or test strips within a print) align exactly where the operator places them. Fourth, it positions the paper at a known distance from the enlarger lens, which determines magnification and is essential for proof sheets or contact prints where paper placement must be repeatable. Fifth, it allows the operator to move the paper laterally during exposure—a technique called "dodging" or "burning"—without losing registration.
