Chapter 1: Understanding Cutters

A cutter is a tool designed to separate, sever, or divide material by applying a sharp edge or edges under pressure or speed, or both. That definition covers an enormous range of physical objects—from a utility knife to a rotary saw to an industrial waterjet—but they all perform the same essential function: they use concentrated force, applied through a thin, hardened edge, to break material apart along an intended line.

Understanding what cutters are and how they work requires stepping back from any single tool and recognizing the physics and context they share. When you cut something, you are overcoming the material's resistance to separation. Every material—wood, metal, concrete, fabric, glass, plastic—resists being cut, and the amount of resistance depends on the material's hardness, toughness, and structure. The cutter must overcome that resistance faster and more efficiently than the material can absorb or distribute the force. When you do that successfully, the material fails along the intended line and you get a clean cut. When you do not—because your blade is dull, misaligned, moving too slowly, or the wrong type for the material—the result is rough edges, binding, heat damage, or an incomplete cut that requires a second pass.

In practical work, the stakes of this difference are high. A dull blade on a tile saw wastes time and ruins the tile. A misaligned band saw blade heats up from friction and breaks. A hand-held cutter that's wrong for the material frustrates the user and produces
