Chapter 1: Understanding Curtains & Drapes
Curtains and drapes are functional systems. They manage light transmission, control temperature transfer through windows, maintain privacy, and absorb sound. They also serve aesthetic and architectural roles. But these visual purposes are secondary to how they work as engineered components. Understanding what they are and how they function is the foundation for specifying them correctly, installing them safely, and maintaining them for years of reliable performance.
At their simplest, curtains and drapes are fabric panels suspended from a track, rod, or rail system, operated by hand, cord, pulley, or motor. The fabric itself is the performance layer: it blocks, filters, or transmits light depending on its weave and construction. It also creates an air barrier between the interior space and the window glazing. Draped panels break this air barrier into pockets, which reduce convection and improve insulation. The hardware—track, rod, brackets, glides, and pulleys—bears the weight of the fabric and allows it to be moved in and out of the window opening. Together, these elements form a system that must be specified, installed, and maintained with precision to perform as intended.
Why Specification Matters
A poorly specified or incorrectly installed curtain system fails in visible and costly ways. A track installed 1.5 inches too low causes the fabric to drag on the windowsill, creating wear patterns and eventual tearing. Fabric rated for 5-pound per linear inch load installed on a track rated for 3 pounds will cause the track to bow or the glides
