What a Cup Sleeve Actually Does
A cup sleeve is a cylindrical or semi-cylindrical wrap that fits over a disposable or reusable cup. It is most often made of corrugated paperboard, but it can be made of solid paperboard, molded fiber, or other materials. The primary function is thermal: it adds a layer of insulation between a hot drink and the hand. But that is not the whole story. A sleeve also provides structural support, a gripping surface, and a space for branding. In this chapter, we will look at the physics of how it works, the real-world conditions it operates under, and the reasons why its design details - not just its existence - matter.
Consider a standard 12 oz takeaway coffee. The cup itself is typically a double-poly-coated paper cup, about 0.3 mm thick, and the liquid inside is around 75°C to 85°C when it leaves the machine. Without a sleeve, the surface temperature of the cup will be close to 55°C to 65°C within a minute. At 60°C, holding the cup for more than a few seconds causes discomfort that escalates quickly to pain. The ANSI/ISEA 138-2019 standard for hand protection does not directly govern disposable cups, but the basic principle of thermal comfort - a skin contact temperature above 43°C causes tissue damage over prolonged exposure - applies. The sleeve's job is to lower that surface temperature to around 40°C or below, which is the threshold most people can hold indefinitely.
