A cricket bat is a precision tool, not a mystic object. It is a precisely balanced lever manufactured from two primary materials: willow for the blade and cane for the handle. The primary function of the bat is to transfer kinetic energy from your swing to the ball, redirecting it away from the stumps towards or past the fielders. The entire history of bat manufacturing is the story of manipulating material density, lever geometry, and handle flexibility to make that energy transfer as efficient as possible while protecting both the batsman and the bat itself from catastrophic failure.
To understand what a bat is, you must begin with the blade. The blade is the large, flat, cut portion of the bat that is intended to strike the ball. It is not a solid piece of wood; its shape is carefully sculpted to distribute weight strategically. The vast majority of the material is concentrated in a specific area behind the blade's face, known as the "sweet spot." Manufacturers call this area the "spine."
