Chapter 1: Understanding Craft Foil

Craft foil is often perceived as a simple decorative sheet, but a professional understanding requires seeing it as what it is: a highly engineered, multi-layer transfer film. Its purpose is not to be a material in itself, but to act as a precise carrier for a decorative coating that is transferred onto a target surface under specific conditions. That transfer can be initiated by heat and pressure, as in hot stamping, or by an adhesive and pressure, as in cold foiling. The entire utility of the product lies in this ability to deposit a thin, durable, and visually precise layer onto another material, and the quality of that deposit depends entirely on the engineering of the foil's construction.

To understand how it works, let's take a craft foil roll apart, conceptually. It is not a single sheet of colored plastic. It is a composite, usually with four or five distinct layers. The first layer is the carrier, most often a polyester film. This is the backbone of the product. It is what you see when you hold up the roll, and its most critical properties are tensile strength and heat resistance. The carrier must be strong enough to run through a machine at speed without tearing, yet thin enough to be flexible.
