A contact lens care kit is not a single item. It is a coordinated system of chemical, mechanical, and storage components designed to do one critical job: make a contact lens safe and comfortable to wear repeatedly. A standard kit will include a disinfecting solution, a rinsing solution, a storage case, and often a protein remover, but the system's true purpose is more complex than simply 'cleaning' the lens. It is a protocol for mitigating the biological and chemical risks inherent in placing a piece of plastic on the surface of the eye.
To understand the importance of the care kit, you must first understand the problem it solves. The eye is a protected environment. It is protected by the eyelids, the blink reflex, tears, and the immune response of the mucosal tissue. A contact lens interrupts these defenses. It sits on the tear film, drawing moisture, and creates a substrate where microbes, proteins, and lipids from the tear film can accumulate.
