A condom is a thin, flexible sheath made from one of several elastomeric materials, designed to cover the penis during sexual intercourse and create a physical barrier between the penis and vagina (or rectum, or mouth in oral sex). Its primary function is to prevent transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and to reduce the risk of pregnancy. This simple description masks a product that is, in practice, more complex: a manufactured medical device with measurable material properties, performance specifications, and failure modes that matter in real clinical and commercial contexts.
To understand condoms properly, you need to know three things: what they are made of, how they work mechanically, and why those material properties create cascading effects on everything from shelf life to user experience to regulatory approval. None of this is abstract—every choice affects whether a condom does its job.
What Condoms Are Made Of
Most condoms are made from natural rubber latex (NRL), which comes from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis. The latex is harvested as a milky sap, concentrated, and processed into thin elastic sheets. These sheets are then dipped into molds and vulcanized—a chemical process that cross-links the rubber polymers, making the material simultaneously stronger and more flexible. The result is a condom approximately 0.07 millimeters thick (roughly the thickness of a human hair).
