The single biggest misconception about casting concrete is that the concrete is the star. It is not. The concrete is a raw material that you are pouring into a vessel. That vessel—the mold—dictates the shape, the surface finish, the level of detail, and, most critically, the cost per unit of everything you produce. You can use the most expensive concrete mix available, and if the mold is poorly designed or made from the wrong material, you will get a mediocre part that is expensive to produce. Conversely, a well-chosen mold can turn a cheap, standard mix into a premium-looking product with a long service life.
This reality often comes as a surprise to people who are new to casting. They spend time and money researching cement types, aggregate sizes, and admixtures, but treat the mold as a simple container. In truth, the mold is a precision tool. It is subject to pressure, abrasion, and chemical attack every time you use it.
