What Is a Computer Server?

A computer server is a physical machine designed to run software services reliably, continuously, and often with minimal intervention. Unlike a desktop computer, which is built to serve a single user for brief periods, a server is engineered to process requests from multiple clients or run application software unattended for months or years. The distinction is not academic. It determines cost, reliability, capacity, and your risk if the machine fails.

The core difference lies in redundancy and longevity. A desktop computer has one power supply, one cooling fan per component, and components rated for a few thousand hours of operation. If the power supply fails, the machine stops. If the cooling system fails, the CPU throttles and the system becomes unreliable. If the storage drive fails, you lose data. A server has redundant power supplies—typically two or more, wired to different electrical circuits so that one circuit failure does not cause an outage. It has redundant cooling paths. Its components are rated for 50,000 to 100,000 hours of continuous operation—roughly five to ten years of 24/7 runtime—compared to a desktop's rated 30,000 to 40,000 hours (five to eight years assuming typical daily use). A server hard drive is built for continuous operation and high duty cycles; a desktop drive is built for intermittent use. This architectural separation is why server hardware costs two to four times as much as consumer-grade components with the same raw specification.
