Chapter 1: Understanding Computer Monitors
A computer monitor is a display device that converts electrical signals into visible light, arranged in a grid of pixels. It sits between your computer and your eyes. The monitor's job is simple in principle—translate what your graphics processor calculates into an image you can see—but the implementation has profound consequences for how long you can work without eye strain, how much detail you can see, how accurately colors represent your source material, and how much money your organization spends on display infrastructure across hundreds or thousands of workstations.
Understanding what a monitor actually is requires understanding this path: your computer generates a video signal—a stream of data that describes what color and brightness each pixel should display. That signal travels over a cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or legacy protocols) to the monitor. The monitor's electronics receive that signal, translate it into electrical currents that control millions of individual liquid crystal cells or light-emitting elements, and arrange them on a glass panel. Light passes through (or is emitted from) those cells in patterns, and your eye assembles those patterns into an image. This happens 30 to 240 times per second, depending on the monitor's refresh rate.
The monitor is therefore not a passive receiver. It makes constant decisions about how to display information. A 24-inch monitor with 1920 x 1080 resolution displays approximately 2 million pixels. A 27-inch 4K monitor displays roughly 8.3 million pixels. Each of those pixels must be addressed dozens of times
