A computer cover or skin is a physical barrier applied to the exterior surfaces of a computing device. The distinction between a "cover" and a "skin" is not just semantic, but practical. A "skin" typically refers to a thin, adhesive-backed film that conforms to the device's exact contours. A "cover" is generically any protective shell, sleeve, or keyboard overlay that is not necessarily adhesive. Both exist to serve the same primary functions: protection from the environment, preservation of resale value, and visual or commercial identification. This chapter explains what these products are made of, how they function mechanically, and why they matter in a professional context.
Material Composition and Physical Function
Understanding the material is the first step to understanding the product. The most common material for a laptop skin is a polymer film, usually polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), backed with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA). The polymer film provides the structural properties—durability, flexibility, and texture—while the PSA is responsible for secure, non-damaging attachment. Thicker films, typically in the range of 0.1 to 0.3 millimeters, offer better impact absorption against scratches but are less flexible around curved edges. Thinner films, below 0.1 millimeters, conform to every contour perfectly but offer less resistance to a sharp object.
