A compact fluorescent lamp is a folded or coiled fluorescent tube that produces light using ionized gas and phosphor coatings instead of the hot wire filament found in traditional incandescent bulbs. Rather than heating a metal element until it glows, a CFL ionizes mercury vapor inside a sealed glass tube, and that ionized gas excites phosphor powder on the tube's interior wall, causing it to emit visible light. This fundamental difference in how light is produced—through gas discharge rather than thermal radiation—is why CFLs use roughly 75% less electricity to produce equivalent light, last 8 to 15 times longer than incandescent bulbs, and require a ballast to regulate the electrical current flowing through the tube.
To understand why CFLs matter in practice, consider a simple comparison. A 60-watt incandescent bulb rated for 1,000 hours of life produces roughly 800 lumens (a measure of visible light output) and costs about $0.72 per year to operate in a fixture burning 3 hours daily. A 13-watt CFL producing the same 800 lumens lasts 8,000 hours and costs about $0.18 per year to operate at the same usage rate. Over 8 years—the expected life of the CFL—the incandescent approach costs roughly $5.76 in electricity plus replacing the bulb 64 times at, say, $0.50 each, totaling $37.76. The CFL costs $4.50 upfront and $1.44 in electricity, totaling $5.94. In a building with hundreds or thousands of fixtures, this difference scales quickly. A 200-unit apartment complex spending $5,000 annually on
