A climbing rope is a specialized textile product engineered to manage the forces generated during a fall. It is not a simple cord; it is a system of interlocking components designed to dissipate kinetic energy, absorb shock, and protect the climber. Understanding this core function, the physics of a fall, and the material science involved is the foundation of all practical knowledge about rope. This chapter provides that foundation, grounding every subsequent discussion on selection, use, and maintenance in the physical reality of what the rope is and how it works.

What a Climbing Rope Actually Is

At its most basic, a modern climbing rope is a "kernmantle" construction. This German-originated term translates to "core and sheath." The core (the kern) is a bundle of continuous, parallel or twisted filaments that bear the primary load. The sheath (the mantle) is a woven exterior layer, typically a braid, which protects the core from abrasion, UV light, and dirt. This is a critical distinction from older rope technologies, such as laid or twisted natural fiber ropes, which lacked this division of labor. In a kernmantle rope, the core provides strength, while the sheath provides durability and handling characteristics.

The core is not a single unit. It is composed of many smaller bundles called "strands" or "yarns." In a dynamic rope, these yarns are typically made from nylon (polyamide) or a nylon copolymer. These fibers are chosen for their exceptional ability to stretch under load and then recover.
