Clay pigeons are ceramic targets designed to break cleanly on impact from shotgun pellets. They are the standard projectile in shotgun sports—trap, skeet, and sporting clays—and are used for both recreational practice and formal competition. Despite their apparent simplicity, clay pigeons are engineered products with specific material properties, manufacturing tolerances, and performance characteristics that directly affect shooting consistency, equipment wear, facility liability, and operational costs.
Understanding what clay pigeons actually are requires looking at three dimensions: their physical construction, the manufacturing standards that govern them, and the role they play in the shooting sports ecosystem.
Physical Construction and Materials
A clay pigeon is a molded disk, typically 110 millimeters in diameter and 25 to 28 millimeters thick, weighing between 100 and 105 grams. The exterior shape is slightly domed on one side and flat on the other, designed to catch air and fly predictably when thrown at velocity. The material composition has evolved over decades and remains central to performance.
Traditional clay pigeons are made from a mixture of limestone, pitch, and clay—the "clay" in the name is historically accurate, though modern formulations vary. The limestone provides structural rigidity and determines how the target breaks. The pitch (bituminous material) acts as a binder. Clay minerals round out the composition.
