Citizens Band radio—CB—is a short-range, two-way radio service operating on a specific set of frequencies allocated by the FCC for unlicensed use by the general public. It occupies a narrow slice of the radio spectrum (27 MHz in the United States), operates with defined power limits and technical constraints, and remains in practical use by truckers, construction crews, fleet managers, emergency responders, outdoor enthusiasts, and electronics hobbyists. The Citizens Band service was created by the FCC in 1945 as an unlicensed radio service for the general public. Unlike amateur radio (which requires a license and technical examination) or commercial radio services (which require expensive licensing and spectrum allocation), CB was explicitly designed to be accessible without a license, without technical qualifications, and without significant financial barriers. In the United States, anyone can legally transmit on CB frequencies using approved equipment. This regulatory simplicity—combined with the real-world need for short-range, independent voice communication—established CB's original constituency and explains its survival through decades of technological change.
CB radio operates on 40 channels in the standard U.S. allocation, numbered 1 through 40, spanning the frequency range from 26.965 MHz to 27.405 MHz. Each channel is 10 kHz wide.
