1. The Modern Carpet Sweeper
A carpet sweeper is a manual, mechanical device designed for the collection of dry, loose debris from floor surfaces. It operates without electricity, batteries, or any form of internal combustion. This simplicity is its primary defining feature. Unlike a vacuum cleaner, which uses a motor to create suction and pull air through a filtration system, a carpet sweeper relies purely on a rotating brush that flicks and propels debris into a built-in collection bin or pan. The energy for this action comes directly from the user pushing the device across the floor. There is no electric motor, no filter to clog, no bag to replace, and no power cord.
This mechanical action is achieved through a simple gear and pulley system. The wheels are the primary driving mechanism. As the sweeper is pushed forward, the wheels turn a central axle. This axle is connected to the main brush roll via a series of gears or a toothed belt. The brush roll, which sits perpendicular to the direction of travel, rotates at a much higher speed than the wheels themselves. A typical gear ratio might be 5:1 or 6:1, meaning the brush spins five or six times for every rotation of the wheel. This high-speed rotation generates the flicking motion that propels debris forward and up a curved ramp, depositing it into a detachable dust pan or a set of rubber wipers that hold the debris until the pan is emptied.
