Chapter 1: Understanding Carpet Cleaners
A carpet cleaner is not a single machine, but a system designed to remove dry soil, sticky residues, and biological contaminants from textile flooring. The most common and professionally dominant system is hot water extraction, often referred to as "steam cleaning," although it does not actually use steam. The machine sprays a mixture of water and cleaning agent into the carpet pile under pressure, agitates the fibers to loosen the bond between dirt and the textile, and then uses strong suction to pull the liquid and the suspended soil back out of the carpet and into a recovery tank. This process works because the carpet acts as a depth filter. Over a period of months, every footstep grinds particulate matter deep into the yarn. Vacuuming removes surface debris and some dust, but it cannot reach the heavier particles that lodge at the base of the tufts. Extraction flushes them out from the bottom up.
To understand why this flushing action is necessary, consider the construction of a typical commercial carpet. It is usually made of nylon or olefin yarn, tufted through a primary backing and locked in place by a secondary backing layer of latex. The yarn forms a dense forest of vertical loops or cut ends. This structure accumulates a surprising quantity of soil by weight. It is not uncommon to find that a visibly dirty commercial carpet, in a high-traffic lobby, contains several times its own weight in dry soil and oily particulate
