What a Candle Is

A candle is a contained fuel source designed to produce light and heat through combustion, and optionally to release fragrance as a secondary function. That's the functional definition. A candle sits in a room or space—a bedroom, a living room, a hotel lobby, a restaurant table, a church sanctuary—and it burns continuously for hours, producing a known amount of light and heat, and (if scented) dispersing fragrance throughout the space.

Unlike a match or a lighter, a candle is engineered to sustain combustion steadily over time. The wax is not the fuel alone; the wick is a critical part of the system. The wick absorbs melted wax (now liquid fuel) and carries it upward into the flame zone, where it vaporizes and burns. This is not accidental.
