Chapter 1: Understanding Cameras & Optics

A camera is a light-gathering and light-recording instrument. Light enters through a lens, passes through a shutter mechanism and an aperture (an adjustable opening), and strikes a sensor or film, which captures the light as an image. A lens is a precisely shaped optical element—or more commonly, a series of them—that focuses that light onto a flat plane where the sensor sits. These two components, lens and sensor, working together through the physics of refraction and exposure, determine almost everything about the image you capture.

Understanding cameras and optics means understanding this interaction: how light behaves, how lenses bend and focus it, how sensors record it, and how the specifications of each component affect the final image. This is not abstract knowledge. It is the foundation for making correct equipment choices, troubleshooting problems, and understanding why certain gear works for a specific job and other gear fails.

How Light Enters and Focuses

Light travels in straight lines until it hits a curved surface. A lens curves glass in a specific way to bend light rays, converging them to a single point—the focal plane—where the sensor sits. The focal length of the lens is the distance from the lens's optical center to that focal plane, measured in millimeters. A 50mm lens converges light to a focal plane 50mm away; a 200mm lens to a point 200mm away.
