Chapter 1: Understanding Camera & Video Camera Lenses
A camera lens is a precision optical and mechanical system. It accepts light from a scene, focuses that light onto an image sensor or film plane, and controls how much light reaches the sensor through an aperture. This is the basic function. But what makes one lens different from another—what makes one lens $300 and another $3000, or why two lenses with the same focal length produce visibly different images—is not apparent from a casual description. To use lenses effectively in production, you need to understand how they are actually built, what happens inside them, and how their design choices affect your final image.
At its core, a lens is a series of glass elements arranged in groups, held in a mechanical barrel, and equipped with electronic contacts that communicate with the camera body. The arrangement of these elements—their curvature, spacing, materials, and coatings—determines the lens's optical properties: its focal length, maximum aperture, depth of field, contrast, aberrations, and transmission (how much light it lets through). The mechanical barrel must hold these elements in precise alignment—sometimes to within fractions of a millimeter—while allowing focusing and aperture adjustment. The electronic components enable autofocus, image stabilization, aperture control, and communication with the camera's metering and exposure system.
Understanding what actually happens inside a lens matters because it explains why specifications mean what they mean, why certain lenses are heavier or more expensive than others, and how to diagnose problems when something goes wrong. It
