The Camera Strap as a Mechanical System
A camera strap is not an accessory. It is a load-bearing safety device that connects a precision instrument costing anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars to your body. When you put a camera strap over your shoulder or around your neck, you are entrusting the entire value of that camera, and often its attached lens, to a length of woven material and a few pieces of metal or plastic. The strap is the only thing standing between your gear and the ground. That is not a marketing point; it is a structural fact that defines everything in this book.
Consider the forces involved. A typical professional camera body with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens weighs roughly 2.2 kilograms (about 4.8 pounds). Under a brisk walking pace, that weight oscillates and generates dynamic loads significantly higher than the static weight. A sudden trip or a stumble can produce a shock load of four to six times the static weight. That means a strap holding a 2.2 kilogram camera can momentarily absorb 10 to 13 kilograms (22 to 29 pounds) of force. At the moment of a fall, the strap's hardware and stitching are the only elements preventing a catastrophic impact.
