A camera lens zoom unit is not a single lens, and thinking of it that way is the first error most people make. It is a precision mechanical and optical assembly that changes the effective focal length of a camera by moving two or more lens groups along the optical axis. That movement, executed with tolerances measured in thousandths of a millimeter, is what allows you to stand still and have your subject fill the frame or recede from it, without trading speed or image quality for the convenience.

The reason a zoom unit matters in professional practice comes down to one word: repeatability. A prime lens has a fixed optical formula, ground and coated once, and it delivers exactly the same character of image every time. A zoom unit has to deliver a range of focal lengths, but it also has to deliver them consistently. When you pull focus on a 70-200mm f/2.8 and rack your zoom from 70 to 200, the image has to stay acceptably sharp across the entire travel. If the mechanical cam that positions the lens groups has even a small machining error, you will see the focus drift, the image will breathe, or the sharpness will be inconsistent across the focal range.
