Chapter 1: Understanding Camera Flashes

A camera flash is an electronic light source that produces a brief, bright pulse of light synchronized with your camera's shutter. Its purpose is simple: illuminate a subject when ambient light is insufficient for proper exposure at your desired shutter speed and aperture. But how and why a flash behaves the way it does — and why that behavior matters — requires understanding the system as a whole: the flash unit itself, how it communicates with the camera, and how the burst of light affects your image.

To understand flashes, start with what happens in the instant your shutter button is pressed. Your camera's shutter opens. Simultaneously (or a fraction of a second later, depending on sync mode), the flash's triggering circuit closes an electrical connection inside the flash tube. This ignites a high-voltage xenon gas, creating an intense white plasma that releases light for a brief duration — typically 1/200th of a second to 1/20000th of a second, depending on the flash and power setting. The flash's reflector focuses that light toward your subject. As soon as the xenon gas stops emitting, the shutter closes (or continues to expose film or sensor). The flash then begins recycling: charging its capacitor back to full power so it's ready for the next shot.
