What Camera Film Is

Camera film is a physical emulsion—a light-sensitive layer of silver halide crystals suspended in gelatin—coated onto a flexible plastic or acetate base. When exposed to light, those crystals undergo a chemical change. That change is then developed using chemical baths that convert the exposed crystals into visible metallic silver (or dyes, in color film), creating a permanent image. The film stays in the camera until the entire roll is exposed, then it is removed, developed in a darkroom or lab, and scanned or printed. Unlike digital sensors, which capture and display images electronically in real time, film requires physical development—a chemical process that takes hours or days—before you can see what you've captured.

This distinction matters immediately. Film does not give you instant feedback. You cannot chimp—look at the back of the camera to review an image. You cannot adjust settings in post-processing before the film is developed. You cannot re-expose the same frame. Once light hits the film and that frame advances, that exposure is permanent, waiting in chemical suspension until development unlocks it. This is not a limitation unique to film; it is the fundamental nature of film as a medium.
