1. Understanding Cabinet Hardware
Cabinet hardware is the mechanical interface between a stationary cabinet box and a moving door or drawer. That sounds simple, but dozens of parts work in concert every time you Open a kitchen cabinet or pull out a heavy tool drawer. A hinge is doing three jobs at once: it transfers the door's weight to the frame, it guides the door through a precise arc, and it holds the door in a specific alignment over inset or overlay openings. A drawer slide does similar work, but in a straight line, and it must carry whatever load you put into the drawer, not just the drawer's own weight. Knobs, pulls, catches, and stays are the simpler end of the system, but they still have to resist thousands of pulls, installs, and removals over their working life.
When you specify or install a piece of cabinet hardware, you are specifying a mechanical component with engineered limits. The hinge for a lightweight upper cabinet door is not the same component as the hinge for a full-height pantry door, even if they look similar at a glance. The difference lies in load capacity, cycle rating, and the geometry of the mounting interface. The same logic applies to slides: a 14-inch under-mount slide rated for 75 pounds will not survive the years if you use it for a drawer storing cast-iron cookware that you leave open and lean on.
