The humble button and the simple snap are arguably the most reliable and ubiquitous mechanical devices in human history. Before the zipper, before hook-and-loop tape, before magnetic closures, there was the button. Its basic premise has not changed in thousands of years: a rigid or semi-rigid piece of material, slotted through a hole or loop, that holds two pieces of fabric together under tension. The snap is a more recent invention, a refinement that offers a faster, often more secure mechanical fastening, but it solves the same fundamental problem. To work with these fasteners professionally, you must move beyond seeing them as consumer goods and instead understand them as precision components in a mechanical system.

Let's begin by dissecting a button. A typical sew-through button is composed of two primary elements: the face, which is the part you see and touch, and the holes, which are called the sew-through holes. A shank button replaces the holes with an integral or separately attached loop of material—the shank—on the underside, which provides space for the thread and allows the button to sit above a thick layer of fabric. This is a critical distinction. A sew-through button on a heavy wool coat will pull the fabric tight against the face of the button, creating an ugly depression and placing excessive strain on the thread.
