A buoyancy compensator, or BC, is a garment or harness fitted with an inflatable bladder that allows a diver to control their buoyancy—their tendency to sink or float—while underwater. In its most basic sense, it solves a fundamental problem: a diver wearing a weighted wetsuit and metal tank will sink uncontrollably unless that weight is balanced with lift.
On dry land, this problem seems abstract. But at 60 feet below the surface, where pressure is three times what it is at sea level, buoyancy control becomes a matter of precision, safety, and survival. A diver who cannot control their descent will hit the bottom hard or exhaust themselves fighting an uncontrolled rise. A diver who cannot maintain neutral buoyancy—the midpoint between sinking and floating—will waste air finning constantly to stay level, will fatigue quickly, and will have no margin for error if something goes wrong. The BC is the tool that grants a diver the ability to hold any depth, move smoothly through water, and manage an emergency ascent with control.
Understanding why this matters begins with understanding the physics of buoyancy itself. Every object underwater experiences two forces: the weight pulling it down and the buoyant force pushing it up, which is equal to the weight of the water the object displaces.
