The bubble level, an invention that predates the laser and the digital sensor by centuries, remains the most direct, affordable, and dependable way to define a perfect horizontal or vertical line in the physical world. It's a simple tool, but its simplicity is deceptive. The Mechanics of Gravity
The core principle of a bubble level is gravity. The Earth's gravity exerts a constant, predictable force pulling everything toward the center of the planet. A bubble level is designed to be a self-contained instrument that measures its own relationship to this force. The key is a sealed glass or acrylic vial, usually called a "vial" or a "tube," that is only partially filled with a liquid. The liquid is typically a type of alcohol or a specialized mineral oil. The remaining space in the vial contains a bubble of air or inert gas. Because the liquid is heavier than the gas bubble (it has a higher density), gravity always pulls the liquid to the lowest point of the vial. The bubble, being lighter, is forced to rise to the highest point.
