A bridal veil is not a single piece of cloth; it is a multi-component textile system. It is a designed assembly of fabric, an edge finish, a gathering mechanism, and a fastening point. The primary function is aesthetic, but the engineering is practical. A veil must hang in a specific way, move with the wearer, and remain anchored to the hair through hours of wear. Without understanding how these parts work together, a professional will rely on guesswork, which leads to mis-fit, damage, or a style that fights the gown.
The foundation is the fabric panel. Nearly all veils are made from a netting or a sheer woven fabric. The most common are variations of tulle (a hexagonal or square net) and organza (a crisp, plain-weave silk or synthetic). The choice of fabric dictates the hand (how it feels) and the drape (how it falls). A 6-inch wide silk organza is a stiff, substantial material. It holds a shape and creates a trumpet-like flare. A 108-inch wide polyester illusion, by contrast, is a fine, limp net. It has no body; it collapses onto the shoulders and floats behind the gown. This is not a matter of quality. It is a matter of intent. A heavy silk veil for a minimalist satin gown creates a sculptural contrast. A translucent polyester illusion for a heavily beaded dress provides a halo without competing for attention.
