A brass instrument is a machine of close tolerances. Piston valves may have a gap of just a few microns between the piston and its outer casing. A trombone slide functions through the precise, effortless movement of two telescoping tubes held at a constant, narrow clearance. These moving parts operate under pressure and at high speeds, and they must do so with a fluidity that allows the player to execute subtle musical gestures. At its most fundamental level, a lubricant reduces friction. Friction is the resistance to motion when two surfaces meet. On a molecular level, even the most highly polished metal surfaces are rough, with peaks and valleys. When these peaks interlock, they resist movement, creating wear over time. A lubricant fills these microscopic gaps, creating a film between the moving parts. This separates the two metal surfaces, so instead of metal grinding against metal, you have layers of fluid sliding against each other.
