A bra is a garment engineered to distribute the weight and movement of breast tissue across the torso. That sentence contains the entire practical definition. Everything else—aesthetics, brand positioning, marketing claims, fashion trends—is secondary to that core function. Understanding how a bra actually works, and why the engineering matters, is the foundation for every practical decision you'll make about buying, fitting, selling, or manufacturing them.
To understand bra function, you need to know what a bra does physically. Breast tissue is soft, unsupported tissue with mass and density. In motion—walking, running, exercise—that tissue moves. Without support, the tissue stretches the ligaments and skin that anchor it, which causes discomfort and over time can contribute to sagging. A bra manages that movement by distributing the weight across a larger surface area of the body, primarily the band (which sits around the ribcage) and the straps (which transfer load to the shoulders and back). The cup contains and shapes the tissue. The structure—whether it includes rigid underwire, flexible boning, or relies entirely on fabric tension—determines how much support the garment provides and how effectively it manages movement across different activities.
