Chapter 1: Understanding Boxing Gloves & Mitts

Boxing gloves and mitts are engineered hand protection systems designed to do two critical, sometimes competing things: protect the boxer's hands and wrists from impact injury during training and competition, and protect the training partner or opponent from concentrated striking force. Understanding them requires moving past the idea that a boxing glove is simply "padded leather on your hand." It is a product with measurable specifications—padding density, weight, knuckle protection geometry, closure mechanism, and material composition—that determine how well it performs these two functions and how long it lasts under actual training load.

To understand why these specifications matter, start with what happens when a boxer throws a punch. A closed fist striking a heavy bag, speed bag, or another person generates impact force that travels from the knuckles through the hand bones, wrist, and forearm. Without protection, repeated striking causes cumulative damage: fractures in small hand bones, compression injuries in the wrist, and inflammation in the joints. A boxing glove's primary job is to disperse that impact force across a larger surface area and absorb energy through padding, so the force that reaches the hand is reduced to a manageable level. This is not incidental protection—it is the core reason the product exists.

The second function—protecting the training partner—is equally important and shapes the design significantly. When a mitt holder or sparring partner receives a punch, the glove's padding must not simply protect the puncher; it must also cushion the blow to
