Boat storage racks are a specialized category of material handling equipment designed to store watercraft out of the water. They are a permanent or semi-permanent fixture of a marina, boatyard, or private waterfront, built to support a vessel's weight on its hull, not its trailer. The most common configuration is a freestanding steel frame structure, similar in appearance to a large industrial shelving unit, with individual berths that each hold one boat. These berths are accessed by a hydraulic or mechanical lift, which is either integrated into the rack structure itself or operated as a separate piece of equipment, like a forklift with a specialized attachment.

To understand what a boat rack actually does, separate the two main problems it solves: storage density and hull protection. A standard boat on a trailer on flat ground can occupy a generous footprint. A 24-foot center console, for example, with its trailer, can consume a 300-square-foot parking space. A storage rack changes this equation entirely by stacking boats vertically. A single rack system with a footprint of 1,500 square feet, and a height of four berths, can store 20 to 24 boats of that same size, moving the storage density from one boat per 300 square feet to one boat per 70 square feet. This is the fundamental reason a professional marina or a storage business uses racks.

The second problem, hull protection, is more subtle but equally critical. Boats are not designed to sit on their
