A birdhouse is a functional enclosure designed to provide nesting habitat for cavity-nesting bird species. This distinction matters because it means birdhouse performance is measurable and tied to physical specifications. A birdhouse either meets the nesting requirements of a target species or it does not. These requirements—entrance hole diameter, interior volume, roof overhang, drainage, ventilation—are not negotiable.
