Chapter 1: Understanding Binding Combs & Spines

A binding comb is a cylindrical plastic spine with a series of curved, finger-like teeth along its length, and a binding spine is a more general term that covers this and other comb-like fasteners, including wire loops. The system is deceptively simple: a stack of paper is punched with matching rectangular holes along its edge, the comb's teeth are passed through the holes, and the comb is then closed to pull the pages into a neat, secure book. This mechanism, known as the "GBC" or "21-hole" system in its most common form, is a cornerstone of office and professional document production, distinct from perfect binding or stapling. Its value lies in its combination of durability, lay-flat capability, and the ability to easily add or remove pages, a feature difficult to achieve with other accessible binding methods.

To understand how it works, consider the physical process in detail. The plastic comb, usually made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), starts as a single piece with teeth that are still curled or partially open. The binding machine has a long, manual or motorized lever that, when engaged, slides a series of pins or a bar into the hollow core of the comb. These pins separate the teeth, opening the comb like a clam shell. While open, you place the punched stack of paper over the teeth.
