Chapter 1: Understanding Billiard Pockets

A billiard pocket is an engineered receptacle built into the frame of a billiard table at the four corners and two sides, designed to catch and hold balls that players intentionally drive into them during play. It sounds simple. In practice, a pocket is a system of mechanical and geometric components that must meet precise performance standards or it will degrade play quality, frustrate players, accelerate table deterioration, and waste money on replacement and repair.

The pocket consists of three functional parts: the opening, which is the hole through which the ball enters; the cushion interface, which is the edge of the table at the pocket opening where balls impact as they roll into the pocket; and the retention chamber, which is the space below or behind the opening where balls collect after they fall. Each part must be dimensioned, shaped, and maintained to specific tolerances. If any part fails to meet those tolerances, the entire pocket fails to perform its job.

To understand why this matters, consider what happens to a ball as it enters a pocket during normal play. A player strikes the cue ball with the cue stick. The cue ball travels across the table and strikes an object ball. That object ball now has velocity. Its path intersects with a pocket opening.
