A Precision Product, Not a Commodity

The modern billiard ball emerged in the mid-19th century as a replacement for ivory, which was expensive, inconsistent, and subject to poaching regulations. Today's balls are manufactured from phenolic resin, polyurethane, or other engineered polymers, designed to deliver consistent rebound, spin transfer, and collision behavior. A tournament-grade set of 16 balls might cost between 200 and 600 dollars, not because of scarcity or luxury branding, but because consistent performance at that level requires precision molding, quality control, and material selection that cannot be rushed or cheapened without measurable loss of playability.
