A bicycle is a mechanical system engineered to convert human leg power into motion. At its simplest, it consists of a rider seated on a frame, pedaling a crank that rotates a chainring, which pulls a chain, which rotates a rear sprocket (or cassette), which turns a rear wheel. The rear wheel drives forward against the ground, and the front wheel follows, steered by the rider through handlebars. This basic system has remained recognizably the same for over a century because it solves the core problem with remarkable efficiency: how to move a person and cargo using only their legs.

Understanding bicycles requires understanding how these systems work together, how each choice about materials, geometry, and components affects the riding experience and maintenance burden, and what trade-offs are inherent in different designs.
