Chapter 1: Understanding Bicycle Spokes
A bicycle wheel is a structure under constant, dynamic tension. It is not a rigid disc, but a tensegrity-like system where the rim, spokes, and hub work in equilibrium. The spoke is the connecting element that allows this system to function, transmitting forces and maintaining geometry. To understand the spoke, you must first understand the load it carries. When you ride, your weight pushes down on the hub. That force doesn't simply flow down to the ground through the bottom spoke; rather, the rim structure itself deforms, and the spokes on the bottom of the wheel lose tension, while the spokes on the top and sides of the wheel act to hold the rim's shape. The primary function of a spoke is to keep the rim in compression, not by pushing down, but by providing tension that is balanced around the entire wheel circumference. The system works because all these tension forces are in a state of equilibrium, pulling the rim toward the center, with only the contact patch and the rider's load disrupting that perfect balance.
Think of a wheel as a suspended bridge, but compressed into a circle. The hub is the road deck, and the rim is the anchored suspension cable. In this analogy, the spokes are the vertical suspender cables. The weight of the deck (the bike and rider) is transferred through the suspenders to the main cable (the rim), which pulls inward toward the supports. In a bicycle wheel, this
