Chapter 1: Understanding Bicycle Pedals

A bicycle pedal is the mechanical interface between the rider and the machine. It is the point where human power enters the drivetrain, and it is also the point where the rider's body meets every road shock, curb impact, and out-of-saddle sprint force. In a component that often weighs under 300 grams, the pedal must handle loads that routinely exceed five times the rider's body weight during standing efforts, and it must do so for tens of thousands of kilometers while exposed to water, grit, salt, and temperature swings. Understanding what a pedal actually does, how it is built, and where it fails is the foundation for every other decision in this book.

The first thing to understand is that a pedal is not simply a platform for your foot. It is a load-bearing pivot that must do three things simultaneously: transmit torque to the crank, allow the rider to find a comfortable foot position, and survive repeated impact without deforming or developing play. Torque transmission is the primary job. When you push down on the pedal, that force is transferred through the pedal spindle into the crank arm, which rotates around the bottom bracket. The pedal's bearings allow the body to rotate relative to the spindle, so the pedal stays roughly horizontal under your foot while the crank spins.
