Bicycle parts are the individual components that make a bike function—the drivetrain that transfers pedal power to the wheels, the braking system that stops forward motion, the steering mechanism that changes direction, and the structural frame and wheels that carry the rider. Because bicycles have been manufactured for over a century and remain fundamentally simple machines compared to automobiles or motorcycles, bicycle parts are often assumed to be interchangeable commodities. That assumption is wrong, and it costs professionals and hobbyists money, time, and safety every year.
A bicycle is not a monolithic product. It is a system in which components interact. A crankset (crank arms, chainrings, and bottom bracket) drives a chain, which moves across sprockets on a cassette (rear gear cluster), which sits on a hub, which is laced into a rim, which carries a tire. Change one component—upgrade the cassette, for example—and you may force compatible changes elsewhere: a different chain width, perhaps, or new derailleurs that can handle the new gear range. Fail to understand these constraints, and you end up with parts that do not fit, do not mesh correctly, or do fail prematurely because one component was undersized for the load another component now demands.
Moreover, bicycle parts vary in material, precision, and intended lifespan in ways that are not obvious from their appearance. A crankset stamped from forged aluminum at a premium manufacturer will look nearly identical to one cast from lower-grade aluminum at a budget
