Chapter 1: Understanding Bicycle Locks
A bicycle lock is a mechanical barrier designed to prevent unauthorized removal or use of a bicycle. That simple definition obscures a fundamental tension: all practical bicycle locks can be defeated. The lock's real function is not absolute prevention, but rather creating enough friction—in time, effort, noise, or specialized tools required—that the cost and risk of theft exceeds the thief's incentive and capability. Understanding this principle shapes how you select, deploy, and maintain locks.
Bicycle theft follows predictable patterns. Most opportunistic thefts occur in plain sight within minutes, committed with tools the thief already carries (pocket knives, adjustable wrenches, or cordless angle grinders). Higher-value bikes attract more determined thieves who plan attacks, bring specialized equipment, or work systematically through locked bikes to find weak points. A lock's job is to sort these scenarios: make the trivial theft impractical, slow the determined thief enough that the risk becomes unacceptable, or at minimum preserve the value and usability of your bike by preventing the worst damage.
The mechanics underlying every bicycle lock fall into two categories: physical barriers (the metal components that resist cutting, leverage, or blunt force) and access control (the cylinder or mechanism that determines who can open the lock). These two systems work in parallel. A padlock's shackle may resist cutting, but if the cylinder can be easily picked or broken, the lock fails. Similarly, an excellent lock cylinder means nothing if the shackle shatters under a few seconds of bolt-cutter pressure.
