Chapter 1: Understanding Bicycle Headsets
A bicycle headset is the set of bearings that connects the bicycle's fork to its frame. It is a deceptively simple component, consisting of a few races, bearings, and a compression mechanism, but it is one of the most safety-critical and handling-critical parts on the entire machine. Every steering input you make, every bump you ride over, and every time you brake hard, the forces generated pass directly through the headset. When it's working correctly, you never think about it.
