Every bicycle has exactly one headset, and almost everyone who rides a bike forgets it exists until something goes wrong. That is a testament to the part doing its job, but it is also a trap for the mechanic, dealer, or serious rider who only thinks about headsets when the front end starts knocking or the steering feels gritty. By then, the problem has usually progressed from a minor adjustment to worn bearings, a damaged crown race, or worse—a scored fork steerer. Understanding what a headset actually is, how it transmits load, and why it fails is the difference between a five-minute preload adjustment and a 300-dollar parts replacement.

A headset is the bearing system that connects the bicycle fork to the frame. It sits at the top and bottom of the head tube—the short metal tube at the front of the frame that the fork steerer passes through. The headset allows the fork to rotate smoothly within the frame so you can steer, while simultaneously transferring the weight of the rider and the frame down through the fork to the front wheel. It also resists the forces generated by braking, accelerating, and cornering.
