Chapter 1: Understanding Bicycle Derailleurs

A bicycle derailleur is the mechanical assembly that moves a bicycle chain from one sprocket or chainring to another. It is the core of a variable-speed drivetrain on most modern bicycles. To understand it, you must understand its function: the derailleur' s sole job is to change the gear ratio between the pedals and the wheel by physically displacing the chain. It does this in response to a cable pull or an electronic signal from a shifter mounted on the handlebar. While the design looks complex, its operation is based on two simple mechanical principles: guiding the chain with a movable pulley, and maintaining tension in the chain to take up slack from the changing gear sizes.

Consider a common real-world scenario: a rider is approaching a hill. They push the shift lever, and the chain climbs from a 16-tooth cassette sprocket to a 21-tooth sprocket. This makes pedaling easier because the rider must turn the crank fewer times for each wheel rotation, but they trade speed for that ease. For this to happen, the rear derailleur must move its upper pulley wheel (the guide pulley) sideways, aligning it with the new sprocket. As the chain engages the larger sprocket, the system requires more chain length. The derailleur's spring-loaded lower pulley (the tension pulley) swings forward to take up the extra slack.
